Qualitynet Under Attack
Ever since Dan Kaminsky discovered a DNS flaw in which malicious hackers can exploit and redirect traffic without the users’ knowledge. Attacks have surfaced worldwide, and guess who’s been hit?
I didn’t get the information about Qnet from any insider but figured it out on my own. First off, in the middle of backing out from a barrage of cross-fire by 7 different terrorists, I lobbed a grenade into the room and squatted behind a concrete barrier, then…aww shit. My connection went down.
I did a quick test on the Xbox for the connection, it reported the DNS is down. So I logged into our wireless router and did another check. Yep, both provided DNS servers seem to be unreachable. I remembered the security flaw (which I duly followed up with our SecOps at work and made sure we’re patched). Anyway, I immediately got to my laptop and did several tests. Then as a final check, I called up the help desk and got an automated message that they are facing severe problems and it’s being worked on. *giggles insanely*
Yep, Qnet seems to have taken a hit. Both DNS servers are unreachable. So it can mean either: the flaw got exploited, DoS attack or some nutjob with a AK-47 hijacked the data center. This morning, people started telling me about the Knet system. Then Zain network. Holy cow. WTF?!
Our ISPs need to clean up their act…fast. I know for a fact that Qnet is way too pigeon-holed. And also Wataniya & Zain’s ’superfast’ HSDPA crap deserve a -1 on the rating board in terms of security.
Ohhh, I love the pic, can’t stop staring at it

you should have read yesterday’s papers man! Zajil was totally dissed by KNET’s boss Akbar! Zajil’s performance has been down those last couple of days too
That makes sense! I dunno why I disregarded the DNS flaw :/
OPEN DNS FTW!!!!
There are definetly DNS issues, I just highly doubt its an attack. Anyway, OpenDNS, VPN or Proxy will help resolve most of your problems.
Chika: I’ve been out of touch with the local news these days. What’s going on? Send me the article!
3baid: If you’re using MS then you should already have had a patch installed. Vendors are already updating their products with patches automatically, except for Apple I think still didn’t fully address the issue.
Q8Geek & K: OpenDNS is the way to go! FYI, Qnet has rebooted their server twice so far according to Netcraft. What do you think the issue may be then?
I assume you know your way around a computer .. why would you restart a server (twice).
ma fahamt shay but what i figure out is quality has problems right? I assume they will not compensated us as usual
nah problems are related to something else. Everything was unreachable and not just the DNS.
We’re using djbdns which isn’t affected by the attack anyway
I’m also not sure how netcraft got reboot data, but it’s incorrect.
One more thing, the exploit was more about injecting false records and hijacking pages. There’s nothing about it that crash the DNS servers.
K: To get a roasting roach off of one of the processors? (in my previous experience)
Dr. Dhari: Business goes as usual, my friend.
Bojacob: Well I’m positive you’re the guru here and according to my call with one of the Qnet guys today, he said they’re ok now anyway.
Regarding the exploit, actually there’s more to it than just injecting & hijacking. I was following up on the Black Hat conference & been waiting for Dan Kaminsky’s presentation, finally got the presentation slides off of his site. You should read it, GREAT reading! If you’re a geek at heart.
Ma fihamt shay
My Internet has been much slower since last week… I use Qnet… so ilmoshkila from them or me?
I gotta keep updating myself with what’s goin on lol, gym and work have all my time nowdays the net is for torrents only for now
