The Golden Compass: A Hidden Message to the Church?

 The Golden Compass

I’m not sure how many of you have watched this movie, I haven’t. But I’ve been following it’s progress since I’m a fantasy buff myself. I’ve never read the books although, maybe the movie is worth watching.

Now there’s an uproar from the Catholic Church (did they ever stop roaring?). The Church claims there are anti-religious themes in the movie in which degrades it’s [The Catholic Church] image.

Here is a complete listing of Hollywood’s controversial movies which I found interesting, with a brief description of each:

Controversial Religious Films

(I didn’t know Moamar Qaddafi financed the Anthony Quinn movie ‘The Messenger’ which was about our Prophet (PBUH).

  1. I WANT TO WATCH ITTTTTTT!

  2. I watched it on sat. Its not bad, although I expected it to be MUCH better, there are other parts I think

  3. I didnt see any religious things, maybe they are referring to the DUST and the different universes.

  4. as far as i know , Qaddafi financed the movie about omar al moktar

also the guy who wrote the golden compass was an atheist and i read someplace he wrote the story because of narnia

  5. chika: I hear it’s worth watching, from the same people who released Lord of the Rings, it’s not up to standards..but oh well..I like these sort of movies.

Hasan: There have been mixed reviews, after 2 blockbusters, I guess the 3rd wasn’t a charm.

ananyah: maybe you need to watch it with a clear mind, or from a religious perspective. ;)

forza: That I knew about, but I’m surprised about “The Messenger”. The studio staff walked out because they thought the movie would cause trouble. Turned out it was a success.
As for the author he is a self-proclaimed atheist and everyone knows that. I suspect the church are attacking him just because of that.

Factoid: Most fantasy writers are atheists.

  6. the author is an outspoken atheist, but that’s not the main reason for the Church’s uproar. Its because the book is part of a series, and one of the themes of the book is the destruction of organized religion, as well as the pursuit to kill a character referred to as “God”.

But to be fair, the directors took out the anti-religious themes from the movie, and left only the main plot and fantasy sub-plots in it.
